Exploring identity through counselling

Feeling accepted by ourselves, our families and our communities is a core human need. Find your safe space to explore what it means to be you, in the context of the world around you.

Our identity is influenced by so many factors; our childhood experiences, cultural background; sexuality; gender expectations; socio-economic status; family; friendships. The list grows as we get older and our experiences of the world around us widens. So, how do you stay true to your core self? How do you determine your own values, dreams, and goals? What brings you joy and how do you seek out these experiences? Through counselling at Mangrove House, these are some aspects of identity and self you can explore with your counsellor.

Staying true to an idea of self is a challenge when you have to consider the needs of the people you love, your own ethics, and social expectations. There are ways to navigate these paths and your therapist will walk by your side as you reflect and examine all the unique qualities that form you.

  • Fritz Perls
"We don’t allow ourselves – or we’re not allowed by others – to be entirely ourselves.”
    Fritz Perls
  • Sigmund Freud
“We are what we are because we have been what we have been, and what is needed for solving the problems of human life and motives is not moral estimates but more knowledge.”
    Sigmund Freud
